Diagnostic Imaging

Imaging technology has improved, and continues to improve, in leaps and bounds. To keep up with changing technologies, the Oakey Veterinary Hospital has converted to digital radiography. This imaging modality allows greater flexibility in imaging the equine skeleton. Dedicated software allows image enhancement and enlargement to greatly enhance our diagnostic capability. Best of all this technology is portable, allowing hospital quality images at your home.

Ultrasonography is the cornerstone of soft tissue imaging. The hospital has a state of the art ultrasound machine that produces high quality images of tendons, ligaments, eyes, and abdominal and thoracic organs. The colour doppler feature also allows evaluation of the heart and blood vessels. We also have the capability of on farm ultrasonography for tendon and ligament evaluation with smaller units. This is a big advantage for the severely injured animal that is unable to travel.

The hospital is also equipped with a 3 metre long videoendoscope. This machine allows evaluation of the upper respiratory tract, a benefit in the evaluation of horses demonstrating poor performance. The endoscope also allows visualisation of the stomach and proximal intestinal tract to confirm a diagnosis of gastric ulceration. Smaller fiberoptic scopes are also available for on property use.
