Endoscopy
The fibre optic endoscope is commonly used for examining the upper and lower respiratory tract. A portable endoscope allows for examination at the stable or after track work. If stomach ulcers are suspected, then examination at the hospital is required using a longer video-endoscope following a period of starvation.
Conditions that cause restrictions of the pharynx and larynx, infectious processes of the respiratory tract, bleeding from one or both nostrils and coughing can be diagnosed using endoscopy.
Other procedures that can be performed if necessary to ensure a more accurate diagnosis of respiratory conditions include transtracheal aspirates [TTA] and bronchoalveolar lavages [BAL].
