Parasite Control
Worming
It’s important to worm your pet regularly as worm infestations (Roundworm, Hookworm, Whipworm and Tapeworm) can make your pet unwell.
Signs that your pet may have worms are:
- Weight loss
- Diarrhoea
- Lethargy(even with a good appetite)
- Pot belly
It’s vital to make sure that the wormer you are using kills hookworm, whipworm, roundworm and tapeworm. Oakey Veterinary Hospital recommends worming your pets with a quality all-wormer such as Drontal Allwormer or Profender.
Drontal Allormer can be purchases in chews, tablets or syrup for puppies. Profender is a top spot that is brilliant for that difficult cat.
If you have any questions on the products or about intestine worms please don’t hesitate to contact Oakey Veterinary Hospital.
Fleas and Other External Parasites
Common external parasites include; fleas, ticks, lice and mites. External parasites can cause significant distress to a pets well being. Constant scratching and irritation caused by constantly biting parasites can lead to self mutilation which can result in secondary infections.
At Oakey Veterinary Hospital we have a range of products to kill parasites and protect your pet for up to one month with each treatment. Simple to use topspots are an easy and effective application method.
Symptoms of parasites infestation includes:
- Scratching and biting at the skin
- Hair loss at the site of scratching
- Thickening of the skin and in severe chronic cases, anaemia
The goal of flea treatment is to kill adult fleas present on the pet and also reduce the number of fleas present in the environment. More than 90% of fleas are living in the environment, so it is very important to treat the environment as part your flea treatment regime.
Taking some small steps can significantly reduce parasites on your pet, and best of all they’ll love you for it!
Heartworm
This is a very serious and potentially fatal disease in dogs and cats.
Heartworm is transmitted from pet to pet by mosquitoes. Once the pet has become infected, it will take about 6 months for the parasite to develop in to adult worms. Adult heartworms live in the heart and adjacent blood vessels.
Options for heartworm control include; monthly Heartguard chews or monthly topspot treatments such as Advocate or Revolution. A simple yearly Pro-heart injection is available in dogs from 12 weeks. Pro-heart can be administered at the same time as the annual vaccination.
