Keyhole Surgery

Both arthroscopy and laparoscopy are available at Oakey Veterinary Hospital.

Arthroscopic evaluation of equine joints has become a routine method of treatment for a variety of conditions, including OCD, sub chondral bone cysts, traumatic chip fractures and infected joints just to name a few.

The procedure is similar to that performed in humans. A rigid scope is placed into the joint through a small incision and attached to a camera, which allows the surgeon to visualise the joint on a television screen. Removal of bone fragments can then occur through a second small incision. Arthroscopy is minimally invasive, which means it provides good cosmetic results and limited scarring. It can also shorten convalescence.

Laparoscopy utlises a rigid telescope and camera to provide the surgeon with a view of the abdominal cavity. It can also provide a minimally invasive means of performing surgeries such as location and removal of abdominal testicles (rigs) or ovarian tumours. Laparoscopy can also be used for diagnostic evaluation of the horse with certain medical conditions, such as chronic unexplained weight loss.
