Opthalmic and Laser Surgery
Eye problems are common in horses. Infectious conditions such as melting corneal ulcers or corneal stromal abscesses can rapidly result in loss of the eye if left untreated. Neoplasms such as squamous cell carcinoma are commonly seen in Queensland, particularly in horses lacking pigmentation such as Paints or Clydesdales.
Both intensive medical and surgical management of ocular disorders is offered at OVH, where our experienced team has been awarded for research in tumour treatment in the equine eye.
Treatment of tumours involving the eye and surrounding tissues can be challenging in advanced cases. The use of electrocautery or carbon dioxide lasers combined with chemotherapy for treatment of skin cancers can improve success rates for resolution.
We offer a full evaluation and treatment programme tailored to your individual horses' condition to give every opportunity for resolution. If you suspect a skin cancer, we urge you to seek advice as soon as possible, as the earlier a tumour is treated the greater the success rate of the treatment.
Feel free to call and discuss your horse with one of our surgeons.
